Jobs Without University: How to Become a Barber After Results Day

The Clearing You Didn’t Know Existed

Results Day can make it feel as though everyone is expected to follow the same route.

Receive your results. Apply through UCAS. Search Clearing if plans change. Spend the next few years working towards a degree.

For some people, university is the right choice. For others, it isn’t.

If you’re reading this with results in hand and no clear next step, know that you’re not out of options. You’re just looking at a different set of them. You may prefer practical learning, want to develop a real skill, or feel ready to begin building your career sooner. Your results do not decide your only path forward.

There are many rewarding jobs without university, and professional barber training offers a recognised route into a creative, practical industry.

You’re Not Wasting a Year

It can feel like everyone around you is moving forward. Friends are packing for halls, group chats are full of “see you at uni” plans, and you’re still working out what comes next. That gap can feel like falling behind.

It isn’t. Choosing a focused, practical route isn’t a pause on your future. It’s the start of it. While others are settling into first-year lectures, you could already be behind the chair, building real skills and a client base you’ll carry into your career.

A Real Alternative to University

Choosing not to attend university doesn’t mean giving up on education or qualifications.

Vocational training prepares you for a specific career through practical learning, professional guidance and real industry experience.

At the London School of Barbering, complete beginners can train without applying through UCAS or competing for a place through Clearing.

This isn’t a backup plan. Students work towards an accredited NVQ qualification that is recognised and respected within the barbering industry.

How to Become a Barber Without University

You don’t need a degree to become a barber. The first step is choosing a course that combines technical education with hands-on experience.

At LSB, students begin with the fundamentals through demonstrations and supervised practice. Once they’ve built the necessary foundations, they progress to working with real clients inside the academy.

During training, students learn how to:

  • Carry out professional consultations
  • Work with different hair types and textures
  • Manage their time behind the chair
  • Communicate confidently with clients
  • Work to professional barbershop standards

The goal isn’t only a qualification. It’s graduating prepared for the reality of working in the industry.

Which Barbering Course Is Right for You?

Both LSB beginner courses are designed for people with no previous barbering experience. The right one comes down to what you want first: a fast route into work, or more time to refine your craft.

9 Week Beginner to Job Ready

A focused route into barbering, leading towards a Level 2 NVQ. This suits you if you want the essential skills, real practical experience, and a barbering career that starts sooner rather than later.

12 Week Beginner to Master

More time to develop technique, confidence and creativity, working towards Level 2 and Level 3 NVQ qualifications. This suits you if you want to go further before you graduate, with sharper technique, more creative control and a stronger start.

Learn Through Real Client Experience

Barbering can’t be mastered through theory alone. You need time behind the chair.

LSB students complete approximately 80 to 100 live-client cuts during training, supported by experienced educators who give guidance and feedback throughout.

Working with real clients helps students develop technical ability alongside the communication, confidence and professionalism employers expect. By graduation, you have practical experience to talk about with employers, not just a certificate.

A Day of Training at LSB

If you’ve never picked up a pair of clippers, it’s natural to wonder what training actually looks like day to day.

Sessions typically combine demonstration and guided practice, and as students progress, supervised work with real clients. Educators are on hand throughout, giving hands-on feedback rather than leaving students to work it out alone. Early days focus on the fundamentals: holding tools correctly, understanding hair types, building consistency. As confidence grows, so does the complexity of the work, until students are consulting with and cutting for real clients under close guidance.

There’s no expectation that you’ll arrive with experience. The course is built for people starting from zero.

For Parents: Is This a Real Career Path?

If your child is considering barbering instead of university, it’s natural to want reassurance. Not just that they’ll enjoy it, but that it’s a legitimate, sustainable path.

A few things worth knowing:

  • The qualification is recognised. Students train towards an accredited NVQ, the same type of nationally recognised qualification used across the industry, not an in-house certificate with no standing outside the school.
  • It’s supervised, not sink-or-swim. Students don’t work with real clients until they’ve built the necessary foundations, and they’re guided by experienced educators throughout, including during live-client work.
  • The skills are portable. Barbering isn’t tied to one employer or one city. Graduates can work in an established shop, become self-employed, rent a chair, or eventually open their own business, whether that’s in London, Manchester or elsewhere entirely.
  • It doesn’t close off university. Choosing this route now doesn’t rule out further study later, if that’s ever the direction your child wants to take.

Many families weigh vocational training against university largely on financial grounds: years of tuition and living costs versus a shorter route into paid, skilled work. That’s a genuine and reasonable part of the decision, and one worth thinking through as a family alongside the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience to start?

No. Both courses are designed for complete beginners, and training starts with the fundamentals.

What if I’ve never even held a pair of clippers?

That’s completely normal. Most students start with no prior experience at all.

Is this the same as an apprenticeship?

Not quite. An apprenticeship is typically employer-based and spread over a longer period. LSB’s courses are intensive, full-time training that leads to an NVQ qualification, preparing you to enter the industry directly.

Can I still go to university later if I change my mind?

Yes. Choosing to train as a barber now doesn’t close off other paths later. Many people build a career first and consider further education down the line, if and when it makes sense for them.

What happens after I finish the course?

Graduates can go on to work in an established barbershop, become self-employed, rent a chair, or use their qualification as a foundation to keep developing their skills. LSB also gives graduates access to a jobs board and a wider network of recruiting barbershops.

What Can You Do After a Barbering Course?

Barbering can lead to several different career paths. You could:

  • Work in an established barbershop
  • Become self-employed
  • Rent a chair and build your own client base
  • Develop specialist or advanced skills
  • Work in another city or abroad
  • Open your own barbershop in the future

LSB graduates can also access the school’s jobs board and a wider network of more than 2,000 recruiting barbershops.

Barbering is also a portable skill. Whether you want to work close to home, move cities or travel, your training can give you more flexibility over where and how you build your career.
